Sayville, New York- Once again co-owners Alison Flodin-Veitch and Jeffrey Behrens have turned to Sayville's teenagers to see how talented young people desgin jewelry they may enjoy wearing.

Silica jeweler Susan Rodgers, from Stony Brook, stepped up as this year's artisan mentor. Susan is known for her innovative pieces that use wire wrappings and bold stone combinations.

Working with Bobbie Dalpiaz and Julia Shapiro and their fashion classes, the young jewelers were invited to pick a combination of gemstontes from Susan's collection and hit the drawing board!

Of the nearly 40 entries, four were chosen as winners:

First-place winner Megan Macri's wire-wrapped pendant features chalcedony briolettes.  
In second place, Kelly DeKenipp created a striking sterling bracelet with coral, green coin pearls and blue green shell.  

 

Jenna Sant's leather bangle with lemon quartz, onyx and moonstone earned her third place.

 

 
Kate Tobin took fourth place by designing a leather pendant using the same stones as Jenna.  
The winners will be awarded at a presentation during the SAVA (Sayville Advocacy for Visual Arts) arts show, at Sayville High School on May 31. The winners' pieces will be on sale at Silica starting June 1. Profits of these sales will be donated to SAVA.
